Alarm Force

Recently celebrating their thirtieth anniversary in the Canadian home security world, Alarm Force is another top rated system that we have been asked to check out, try out, and report back.

One day we’ll discuss why we’re not impressed (and neither should you) with an A+ Better Business Bureau grade, but it’s certainly better than having a lousy score. One of the main reasons that companies wind up with lower BBB scores (besides the fact that they are not paying members) is that customers often do not understand what they are supposed to receive in the package they have selected. It’s not quite Bait & Switch, but something similar. You see an ad that says you can get a home security system for $9.99 a month, but the central monitoring, phone app, storage of video clips are all extra, so when that first credit card bill hits home, people are confused.

This is not an issue with Alarm Force. They have a very easy-to-understand guide that lays out precisely what you get with your plan, and what need to pay to upgrade to the next level.

With two distinct, yet comparatively inexpensive packages, Alarm Force offers many option that are usually offered in the higher levels of other companies. It is also important to understand that Alarm Force does their own installations, so while the equipment is legally only leased to you and may be moved to a new address as you move, it’s still Alarm Force property. While this sounds like it’s a negative, and in some aspects it is, there are a lot of benefits to having professionals handling the installation. Remember, this is an investment in your home and used to protect your valuables and safety. Maybe this is not the best time to handle a DIY project. I can hardly hang a picture frame, so is setting up a home security system really where I want my wife questioning my every move?

.

One interesting feature that AlarmForce provides at an additional cost is their  VideoRelay. This VideoRelay system is really quite fantastic. Installed above your front door, it allows you to not only see who is knocking, but also carry on a conversation with them. Again, this is an additional fee, but it’s great for speaking to people at your front door while you’re at the office conversing through an app on your phone.

As mentioned above, there are two packages, let’s take a closer look into each one:

  1. The Standard Package. This is Alarm Force’s introductory system that is quite affordable, but low on bells and whistles. It is basically connected through an existing land-line to stay in touch with the contracted monitoring system as well as emergency 911 calls. Obviously, it’s more than just contact with 911, which is free, the Standard Package includes a 2-way voice intercom which keeps you in contact with the monitoring company during a situation. You are also given access to an interior siren, a wireless motion detector, and a keypad for remote triggering. This package requires a 3 year contract, but at $25 per month, it is very affordable. Additional items may be added to your package for increased security. Most customers we’ve talked to include an extra motion sensor or even smoke alarms which hook up to the monitoring system for added security
  2. Also available from Alarm Force is the Alarm Plus package. Starting off with all of the Standard Package’s features, the “Plus” package adds additional monitoring in the form of a message that goes directly to the monitor company in case of any tampering with the landline which would in effect, disengage the system. This would add a $99 installation fee and then an added $5 monthly fee, is $60 a year really too much to ask for the additional knowledge that in the event that your landline is being disabled, a message can be sent out before your system is taken offline? Think of it this way, after your home is broken into, would you pay $60 to have everything restored?
Alarm Force has a very nice VRS (video relay system) that enables the resident to lets you see, via video surveillance, anyone at your front door. If someone rings your door bell you instantly receive a phone call and email that allows you to see that individual at the door and talk with them if needed. This works for those with a Smart Phone and is a great option if you’re willing to pay a little more each month.

Alarm Force can be a good value for those that have a smaller residence or don’t have much extra money to spend. Free installation and low monthly monitoring charges can bring peace of mind to those on a tight budget. The Video Relay system is a nice feature but only if you already have a Smart Phone and are willing to pay the extra costs associated with the product. Overall, we liked the customer history at Alarm Force and feel it’s a decent option for the right customer.
